Otoplasty

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure done to improve the appearance of your ears or your child’s ears. Protruding ears or overly large ears can be refined with specific surgical maneuvers. The incision is typically hidden in the back of the ear for protruding ears. For reduction of overly large ears, incisions are typically placed within the skin and cartilage creases.

Ideal Candidates

You are an ideal candidate for an otoplasty procedure if you are in good overall health and do not have any underlying illnesses that could affect healing. You may be recommended for ear surgery if your ears are not proportionate to the rest of your facial features. Patients with minor hearing malfunction due to structural abnormality are recommended to undergo the procedure.

Dr. Layliev will determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for ear surgery and will help you understand the benefits of surgery. Request a consultation online or call to schedule an appointment.

The Ear Surgery Procedure

Otoplasty surgery begins with the administration of anesthetic to prevent discomfort during the procedure. After this, the incisions will be made. Depending on the type of correction needed, the incisions may be created behind the ear or within the creases of the ear.

Tissue will then be removed, reshaped, or grafted to achieve the desired results. Afterwards, the incisions will be closed with stitches.

Otoplasty Recovery

The recovery period after otoplasty surgery depends on the complexity of the procedure. A dressing will be applied on the ears and will remain for several days. Avoid touching or scratching your ears.

You may experience soreness, bruising, numbness and tingling for a few weeks. You may be able to return to work or school after a week to two.

Cost of Otoplasty Procedures

The cost of reconstructive otoplasty surgery is usually covered by insurance. However, if done for cosmetic purposes, price varies from patient to patient. The overall price of a cosmetic otoplasty procedure may be affected by anesthetic and surgical fees.
