Surgical management of breast cancer can now be combined with cosmetic techniques thanks to oncoplastic reconstruction in Long Island. Removal of cancerous growth in the breasts can leave your chest misshapen or unnatural looking. By performing reconstruction using the remaining breast tissue, it is now possible to achieve well-contoured breasts right after tumor excision.
What Is Oncoplastic Reconstruction?
Oncoplasty surgery is immediate breast reconstruction aimed at preserving the contour of your breast following breast cancer lumpectomy surgery and achieving symmetry with your non-affected breast. After a large lumpectomy, your breast may be left with a large tissue defect which if left alone can cause your breast shape to become distorted. Dr. Layliev will rearrange the tissue of your affected breast to preserve a normal breast contour; this can involve a breast reduction or breast lift of your affected breast as well as a breast reduction or breast lift of your non-affected breast, leaving you with a more normal or enhanced appearing breasts after you wake up from surgery.
Ideal Candidates
Breast cancer patients who are recommended to undergo a lumpectomy or mastectomy may also be good candidates for oncoplastic reconstruction. A patient who has enough breast tissue left after mastectomy can benefit from this breast-conserving technique. Patients who want better cosmetic outcomes after unilateral or bilateral breast cancer removal are ideal for this procedure.
Your Consultation
A multidisciplinary evaluation will be completed to confirm your health status and candidacy for the procedure. Diagnostic tests and a physical examination will be performed during your consultation. Your medical history will be thoroughly reviewed, including all underlying conditions, current medications, and past treatments or surgeries.
The Procedure
The oncoplastic reconstruction begins once the removal of the cancerous tissue is complete. The remaining breast tissue may be used to reshape the breasts. Breast lift or reduction techniques may be used on one or both breasts. These include excision of excess skin, tightening of the remaining skin, and removal of fat and/or glandular tissue.
Oncoplastic Reconstruction Recovery
The recovery period following oncoplastic breast reconstruction may depend on the body’s natural healing ability. Most patients need six to eight weeks to fully recover. There will be swelling, soreness, bruising, and pain afterward, as it is a major invasive surgery. Light movement is encouraged in the first few weeks for faster healing.
Some patients are able to return to work after several weeks. Avoid strenuous activities, sports, and exercise for up to eight weeks.

“Great Experience”
I have always had extremely large breasts since I was a teenager. I am now 35 and have 3 children, and after a long drawn-out decision-making process, I finally decided to have my breasts reduced. I have suffered from constant back, neck, and shoulder pain.
I consulted with Dr. Layliev, who helped me decide what procedure would be best for me. I was a size 38M ( yes that is a real size). We decided on a bilateral breast reduction w/ nipple graft. At first, I was a little scared but Dr. Layliev assured me that once he was finished I would look natural.
My procedure was on January 30, 2019, and now almost 2 months later I have small breasts and no back pain at all. I’m not very fond of the scars, I know it’s still early and they will get smaller and eventually disappear.

“21 Years Old, Breast Reduction Very Much Needed!”
To some women having bigger breasts is a blessing, but not in my case. I’ve had nothing but pain and discomfort for years. I am only 2 weeks post procedure but I can already say it was worth it for me. I was a DD/E bra size and I went down to a B. I had been contemplating a reduction for over 10 years. My breasts got larger and larger with pregnancy and weight gain. Even when I lost weight my breasts were still large and droopy. I finally went for a consultation with Dr. Layliev and I immediately felt comfortable with him. He’s a wonderful Dr and truly compassionate to his patient. He explains everything and I never felt rushed as I struggled to ask all my questions because of nervousness. He’s attentive and concerned with your recovery, as he has called me multiple times at home to check up on me…. not many Drs do that, or at least none that I have dealt with. The procedure was really a nonissue for me and recovery so far has been great. I should have done it a long time ago but you get there when you get there. Every time I went in for follow ups I never felt rushed, my questions were always answered to my satisfaction, and most of all Dr. Layliev was always reassuring and his staff always treated me with respect and never made me feel uncomfortable. This office is so pleasant and nice they make you want to go back. It’s such a pleasant experience to LIKE going to a doctor’s office. I lived too many years being uncomfortable and in pain in my neck and back because of my large breasts if I would have known what a gratifying experience this was I would have done it years ago!
